Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that our Burlington, ON office is located on the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat, and many other Nations who have lived on and cared for these lands for countless centuries. Burlington lies within the area governed by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas, and Haudenosaunee that committed all who live here to share the land and its resources in peace, friendship, and mutual respect. We recognize the Mississaugas of the Credit as the treaty holders in this region, and we honour their continued presence and stewardship.
Beyond our Burlington head office location, we acknowledge that our company’s work takes place across the lands now known as Ontario — from Windsor in the southwest, through the Greater Toronto, Guelph and Ottawa regions, and to northern communities such as North Bay. These are the traditional and treaty territories of many Indigenous Nations, including the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations — the Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi — the Algonquin Anishinaabeg, the Anishinaabe, Cree, Haudenosaunee, and others, whose histories, knowledge, and cultures continue to shape this province.
Ontario is covered by numerous treaties and agreements, each representing a solemn commitment to shared responsibilities between Indigenous Peoples and settlers. Central among these is the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which teaches us the importance of caring for the land together and ensuring its sustainability for future generations. We recognize that these treaties are not relics of the past, but living agreements that continue to carry obligations for all people in Ontario, including ourselves.
We honour the enduring presence, resilience, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Ontario. Their languages, cultural practices, and governance systems enrich our communities and represent deep knowledge about living responsibly with the land and water. We also acknowledge the lasting impacts of colonization, including the legacy of residential schools, the displacement of communities, and the ongoing systemic barriers Indigenous Peoples face.
As a company, XS Soil Solutions Inc. understands that a land acknowledgement is only one step in the broader process of reconciliation. We commit to continuing our learning about Indigenous histories and contemporary realities, reflecting on the truths of our shared past, and taking meaningful actions that support reconciliation. This includes building respectful relationships, fostering equity and inclusion in our workplaces, and ensuring that our work across Ontario reflects a responsibility to the land, to its First Peoples, and to future generations.
We express our gratitude to Indigenous Peoples for their care of these lands and waters since time immemorial, and we reaffirm our responsibility to uphold those teachings in how we work, live, and contribute to the communities we are part of.
